Created Woodcrafts
Opening
10 am - 5 pm, Monday to Saturday. Closed Sundays.
All of Rolf's wood is locally sourced, sometimes from within a mile of his workshop. The beautiful forest just outside the Stableyard is full of a wide variety of trees, and Rolf will pick up wind-blown pieces, or pieces pruned in the process of keeping the forest healthy. This wood is then seasoned and turned into plates, bowls, goblets, and a wide variety of useful, and quirky, items.
Occasionally a piece of wood comes from a neighbouring estate or garden, but no tree is ever felled just for its timber. Only natural finishes are used, and each piece is unique.
Rolf is also a volunteer for the International Christian Relief Agency TEARFUND, and their trading arm CREATED. In his shop, next to his own items, Rolf sells Created gifts from 16 developing countries, on behalf of the artists and craft workers there. Created is about enjoying beautiful and useful gifts hand crafted by skilled artisans living in some of the world's poorest communities. Every purchase from Created means people in need have valuable employment, a fair price and a better future.
There are items to suit all tastes and all pockets. From tin bicycles, made in Madagascar to pipes from Peru, scarves from Thailand, Bangladesh and India, jewellery from South Africa to Rolf's own items sourced as close to home as you can get.
Looking for something different? Why not enjoy the peace and beauty of Drumlanrig's forest, and then take home an item made from a tree which grew at the side of the forest path.
Unique to Rolf's workshop are his famous 'nonMagic Wands' which are guaranteed not to be magic. They will never disappoint, as their expectations are just what their name suggests - nonMagic! Wave them about as much as you like, say any 'magic' word you like and see what happens – nothing!
His 'Magic Dragon's Egg of Thraal' is also a guaranteed product with very special qualities, but you will have to visit the shop to get the full story. You may also hear the story of Beatrix the Bad Fairy of Drumlanrig Forest, or Mortimer and Trevor the Trolls who lived behind Druid's Loch.
A visit to Rolf's studio is a must while at Drumlanrig.
