The Woodland Gardens
The Woodland Garden at Drumlanrig is currently being extended to encompass a large area in the shape of a Roman Amphitheatre. The Woodlands Team are thinning the area to create enough dappled daylight to allow underplanting with a range of plants to provide interest throughout the seasons.
Overgrown paths have been cleared, acres of brambles and scrub ripped out and the invasive Rhododendron ponticum partly removed. Meanwhile, the Rhododendron ponticum is being managed in certain areas to provide a windbreak and shelter for other plants.
A variety of trees and shrubs is being added to the existing Rhododendron collection to extend the flowering time and add all-year-round interest. These will include Davidia involucrata (the handkerchief tree), Cercis siliquastrum (forest pansy), Buddleia davidii (butterfly bush) and Halesia carolina (the snowdrop tree) among others. These should enhance the exsiting area and provide a pleasant, peaceful environment for everyone to enjoy.
The Rock Garden and Rhododendron Collection have also recently undergone extensive restoration and are well worth a visit.
