The Victorian Glasshouse

<< CLOSED UNTIL FURTHER NOTICE >>

Sheltering on the north side of the Adventure Playground is Drumlanrig's splendid Victorian Glasshouse which was originally built in 1877 as a show house for tender camellias, palms and climbers. In 2003 extensive renovation was carried out in order to restore the Glasshouse to its former glory.

With the restoration now complete, the Victorian Glasshouse and its mighty structure can again be enjoyed.

The Glasshouse once again proudly displays an array of plants including grape vines, trained peaches, nectarines and figs all bearing edible fruit, a large specimen Rhododendron fragrantissima (variety Duchesse de Buccleuch), Abutilons, Jasmines, and Callistemon bottle brush.

Way up above the Glasshouse, situated in the field at Starn (Starburn) Loch, is the Chimney, built to bring the smoke from the glasshouse fires of Low Gardens.  The flume for the chimney is over 600m in length, with the chimney reaching a further 20m in height.

Constructing such an impressive chimney for these reasons may seem extreme, but without it, the smoke would collect in the valley bottom on a calm day, spoiling the outlook from the Castle for the Buccleuch family in residence.
