The Rock Garden

The Rock Garden at Drumlanrig is beginning to take shape following extensive restoration.  The area has been transformed over the last 18 months into a hidden gem with its south facing position and views onto the picturesque and winding Marr Burn.

The Rock Garden at Drumlanrig

In the 1990s, the rock garden was partly cleared of overgrown scrub and planted with a mixture of rock plants and dwarf conifers.  These conifers, however, turned out not to be quite as dwarf as expected!

They grew to proportions unacceptable for a rock garden and the decision was taken to clear many of these larger, invasive conifers in order to expose the rock structure of the garden.  Self-seeded trees were also removed to allow in an abundance of light. This helped to create the correct growing environment to aid the establishment of suitable and interesting rock plants, shrubs and rhododendron.

New paths have also been created to allow for easier access for visitors to view the garden.
