The Rhododendron Collection
Last year the Drumlanrig Gardens team commenced a long term planting initiative of Rhododendrons and Azaleas and the first of three designated sites has been completed.
The steep banking below the Heather House is currently being restored. In 2002, an area of evergreen Azaleas and Rhododendrons was planted creating a cascading waterfall of colour. This can be viewed from the Heather House or from the wooden bridge spanning the waterfall on the Marr Burn.
Behind the semi-circular stone seat and leading on to the old rock garden, you can find the most recent planting of Dwarf Rhododendron and mid-Hybrids flowering from April to July.
Specimen Rhododendrons have been planted in what is to be the Himalayan Walk. This will be developed over the next few years and will give a contrasting variety of leaf, colour, shape and flower. Most of these plants have been collected from seed from the wild and grown by either Alan Clark, plant collector and nurseryman, or the garden's staff at Drumlanrig.
