Formal Gardens

The East Parterre at Drumlanrig

The gardens at Drumlanrig date back to the 1690s. During this period work began quarrying the slopes around the Castle to create formal terraces and grand parterres. Large square plots elaborately planted with box flowers or cut grass.

During the Victorian period the gardens were re-designed and greatly influenced by two great Victorian gardeners/garden designers Charles MacIntosh and David Thomson. Many new exotic flowers, trees and conifers were introduced and planted. These include many that survive and thrive today including Garrya eliptica, Carpentaria, one of the oldest Douglas Firs, Pseudotsuga manziesii, a fan trained Ginkgo biloba and many more.

Today the gardens are under a long term restoration project with the re-introduction of long lost species and exotics from different periods of the gardens’ long history, restoration of Victorian paths and the Victorian heather clad pavilions.
