Dabton Garden
The area of the garden extends to between two and three acres and is enclosed on three sides by a substantial wall built of the same pink sandstone.
It is maintained by two gardeners and the Duke and Duchess, who are both keenly interested in the garden themselves, have over the years pursued a gradual process of evolution away from the Christmas tree nursery which the garden was when they arrived in 1981.
May is always a popular time to visit this beautiful garden when it is perhaps at its best in springtime when the rhododendrons and azaleas bloom. The main feature in the garden is the natural stream, edged with primulas, hostas and astilbies, that runs through the gardens towards the ponds which in summer display cream and pink lilies. There is also a very long herbaceous border, islands of beds of trees and shrubs, rope trellises, a vegetable garden, greenhouses and a Woodland Walk. The latest addition of a small fountain just inside the main entrance compliments the setting.
The garden opens biennially at different times of the year under the Scotland's Garden Scheme, with many charities benefitting over the years. Check out the Garden Scheme website for our next Open Day.
Entrance is off the A76 between Thornhill and Carronbridge.
