Drumlanrig Castle Gardens

Whether you're a dedicated gardener taking a day off or you've never planted so much as a seed in your life, Drumlanrig's 40 acres of enchanting gardens are inspirational. Open daily throughout the season from 11am until 5pm, the diversity and heritage of the Gardens are as rewarding as their sheer magnificence and beauty.

Mecanopsis on the Long Terrace Walk at Drumlanrig

Some of the Formal Garden designs, such as the Long Terrace Walk, the Shawl (South Parterre) and East Parterre, date back to the early 17th and 18th centuries, while others, such as West Parterre (or Rose Garden), have been restored using later designs.

Restoration work continues on the original Cascade, once visible from the High Terrace of the Castle but seriously overgrown since its abandonment in the 1830s, while the imposing Victorian Glasshouse and historic Heather Houses remain popular visitor attractions.

Modern day additions are equally impressive and range from the sprawling Woodland Garden to the stunning Rhododendron Collection.

The Plant Centre is currently closed but plants available to purchase at the Gift Shop to help visitors recreate a little piece of the Drumlanrig Gardens at home.

Drumlanrig Cascade

During the winter months, the Gardens' team carry out several projects, one of which is to tidy the historic Cascade which had become grossly overgrown with vegetation over the years.

In order to make it more visible from the Castle and Gardens, brambles, scrub and trees from the different levels of the Cascade were marked and cleared.  It was while carrying out this work that the original path leading to the top of the Cascade, was uncovered.
