Cycling at Drumlanrig

Family cycling at Drumlanrig

Drumlanrig Castle and its surrounds have been popular with cyclists for many years. Kirkpatrick Macmillan, inventor of the first bicycle propelled by pedals, had his first job as a Blacksmith at Drumlanrig where he learned his trade.

Within Drumlanrig Country Park there are many exhilarating kilometres of cycle tracks and off road mountain bike trails, each varying in gradient to suit all levels of ability.

Bikes can be hired from Rik’s Bike Shed whether it be for the day, the afternoon or even for an hour. The extensive range of bikes, baby seats and trailers means that everyone in the family can join in.

Expert advice, guided rides, and coaching are offered and the Ranger Service can provide information and route cards for quiet country road rides.  Read more about our biking services here.

Getting to Drumlanrig Country Park by bike is straightforward with two signposted routes, The KM Trail and The National Byway, passing directly past the front door of the Castle.

If, after your bike ride, you find yourself hot or muddy, showers are available in the Stableyard for general use.

The Scottish Cycle Museum

The Scottish Cycle Museum located here at Drumlanrig gives added interest to all visitors, cycling enthusiasts or not, with a collection of over 70 cycles. Featured in the museum is the replica of the original Macmillan velocipede, one of the first full suspension Mountain Bikes and a range of Tricycles, Tandems (with and without side-cars) and Penny Farthings.
