Educational Activities

The Buccleuch family and the Queensberry Estate are committed to working with Educational bodies under the Curriculum for Excellence and Outdoor Learning programmes.  Taking the classroom into the outdoors is an excellent way to promote and encourage a deeper understanding of the impact of environmental management on the local countryside.

To this end, several local initiatives are in place.

School visits at Drumlanrig are suitable for Nursery, Primary and Secondary School children and can be adapted to suit specific curriculm requirements and age groups.  Visits can be either ranger-led or self-guided and can include, among other things, a tour of the Castle, a variety of walks or a chance to experience some of our rural businesses at work.

Rural Skills - Building Boardwalk

Rural Skills

The Rural Skills Partnership is designed for pupils wishing to enter land-based industries on leaving school or to study related topics at College or University.  This relatively new venture is a joint partnership between Wallace Hall Academy and Estate staff with consultancy input from Barony Agricultural College in Dumfries.  Pupils experience hands-on activities backed up by relevant work in the classroom and each course lasts one year.

Rural Skills in the Milking Parlour

Queensberry Initiative

The Queensberry Initiative is the latest project to be organised between the Queensberry Estate and Wallace Hall Academy in an effort to promote closer links between local schools and the Estate and to reduce the gap between vocational and academic training.  It is suitable for pupils of all academic abilities and hopes to encourage those interested in working in the rural area.
