Caring for the Environment
At Drumlanrig we are committed to working in a sustainable way and to administer educational and public access to Drumlanrig Castle and Country Estate.
We aim to build bridges in the understanding between town and country and represent a continuity within the Buccleuch commitment to conserve the British countryside.
We hope to further this aim by promoting a greater awareness of the countryside’s virtual place in the nation's heritage, and provide access and information for a public that is rightly becoming ever more aware of environmental issues.
In 2010, Drumlanrig Castle and Country Estate were thrilled to be awarded a Green Tourism Silver Award in recognition of the contribution we have made to create a greener environment. This represents the culmination of our huge commitment to 'green' issues both at the Castle itself and the wider estate.
In particular we are committed to:
- Complying with and, where possible, exceeding the requirements
of environmental legislation and approved codes of practice. - Supporting local businesses and the local community.
- Stocking sustainable, local and fairtrade goods.
- Reducing our waste, use of energy, water and other resources.
- Raising awareness of ‘green’ issues with both our employees and visitors.
- Continuing the study of wildlife and conservation.
Please help us to be more environmentally friendly by following these simple guidelines:
- Respect Nature
Help us to look after the landscape and wildlife by not dropping litter, guarding against fire and using footpaths and cycle-ways responsibly. - Reduce, Reuse & Recycle
Please use the recycling facilities that we provide. You can find bins to separate your rubbish in the car park and adventure playground. - Shop Local
Why not buy something from our gift shop, which is full of ideal gifts for birthdays, anniversaries and Christmas including a selection of local crafts, fair trade and recycled produce. - Share Transport
If you are meeting your fiends or family at Drumlanrig, try to share rather than each bringing a car. - Carbon Offsetting
The woodlands that surround Drumlanrig are managed in a sustainable way with continual regeneration, helping to offset Drumlanrig's carbon footprint.
Support Green Tourism Businesses
here are hundreds of businesses trying to reduce the environmental impacts through the Green Tourism Business Scheme. Businesses are awarded Bronze, Silver and Gold for their efforts to be more environmentally responsible.
