The Buccleuch Kennel does it again ...

David Lisett, award-winning Kennel manager and dog trainer to the Duke of Buccleuch & Queensberry KBE, had much more than his 40th birthday to celebrate last week.  The number 13 may be unlucky for some but the 13th of January proved to be a thrilling occasion when FTCh Buccleuch Jazz made David's birthday one to remember by winning 1st place in the Kennel Club’s 80th English Springer Spaniel Championship Stake 2009/10.

Buccleuch Jazz wins the British Spaniel Championships 2010

The Championship was held on 11-13 January 2010 at the beautiful Glenarm Estate in Country Antrim, Northern Ireland, by kind permission of Viscount and Viscountess Dunluce.  The ground was varied from manicured woodland to bracken, bramble and whins on an open hill-side.  Game was mostly pheasants with a few rabbits in between.

Three Buccleuch Spaniels – FTCh Buccleuch Lexie (Ruby), FTCh Buccleuch Isla (Poppy) and FTCh Buccleuch Jazz (Kim) – tried their luck but it was Kim, daughter of Int.FTCh Annickview Breeze, who excelled with two nice clean runs and a place in the run-off with two other dogs.  To David’s sheer joy, Kim went on to win 1st place making it an extra special birthday celebration for him – augmented only by the impromptu singing of “Happy Birthday” at the award ceremony by all those present.

As well as the Banchory Cup for the worthy winner, Buccleuch Jazz also came home with the following trophies:

• Conygree challenge Cup for Best English Springer Spaniel
• Millennium Trophy for the Best Hunting Dog of the Championships
• Harwes Silver Trophy for Best Bitch
• Ogle Memorial challenge Cup for the Breeder of the Winner

David said afterwards, “It is always a pleasure competing at Glenarm Estate and particularly so this year coming from 3 weeks of thick snow to nice green fields.  Who would have believed the last twice I have run at the Championship here I have won top place and this year it was even more special with it being on my 40th birthday.”

As well as our own 3 dogs, there were 6 Buccleuch Kennel bred dogs running at the Championship this year – the most from one kennel in any one year.

Well done David and the team!
