Drumlanrig Tearfund Challenge 2012

Saturday 5 May 2012
Start time 8.30 am

The 7th Drumlanrig Tearfund Challenge begins at Drumlanrig Castle and takes in the breath-taking surrounding area - the only sportive that allows you time out for a relaxing lunch in stately surroundings.

Drumlanrig Tearfund Challenge

The Drumlanrig Tearfund Challenge is organised and supported by members of churches from Dumfries and Nithsdale.

Their aim is to provide participants with a memorable and enjoyable cycling challenge in the glorious scenery and traffic-free roads around Drumlanrig Castle, and at the same time raise funds for Tearfund.  Tearfund is a Christian charity dedicated to bringing relief, hope and a future to some of the world's poorest communities and to those suffering from natural and man-made disasters.

This event is free to enter, and riders are only asked to make a donation to Tearfund. The total miles ridden by the 300 riders taking part in the event exceeds the circumference of the world, and reflects the global nature of Tearfund.

Participants have the choice of a 100 miles, a 62 miles or a 40 miles cycling challenge. Whatever route chosen there is the added challenge of tackling the copious supplies of sandwiches and home-baking provided by church members at the feeding stations.  With this event having the unique feature of not timing  the lunch break, the riders can sample as much of the food on offer desired without it impacting on their time.

Drumlanrig Tearfund Challenge

This event becomes more popular each year, with this year's event provisionally full already although names are being taken for the waiting list at drumlanrigchallenge@gmail.com.  The Drumlanrig Tearfund Challenge is the longest running event of its type in Scotland, with the spectacular Drumlanrig Castle at its centre.  The route goes through some of the most scenic countryside in the land, past the birthplace of the first pedal cycle, and on to Scotland's highest village (Wanlockhead) and back.  Not for the faint hearted...... but bravely and successfully ridden by cyclists of all ages and abilities.

Each rider is a hero and, through their donations, brings practical and spiritual life-saving help to people throughout the world (see Tearfund).

For more information on the event, how to enter and for similar events in Scotland, see the Drumlanrig Challenge website.
