Field Sports

The Buccleuch name is synonymous with sustainable countryside. Over the years, the Dukes of Buccleuch have set standards which embody conservation, education and open land for all.

Buccleuch Sportings are internationally renowned for their superior shoot days which are set amidst the most magnificent scenery. The range of field sport facilities have recently been extended to encompass a new and varied programme to suit all interests and abilities. Not only do these activities take place here at Drumlanrig but also on our Bowhill and Boughton Estates.

Pheasant at Drumlanrig

Pheasant

Pheasant Shooting on the Queensberry Estate continues to be a very traditional affair providing sport of the highest quality set among high hills, mixed woodlands and some fantastic gullies, offering some truly memorable shooting.

The 25 varied and diverse pheasant drives extend to 15,000 acres  giving the discerning sportsman a fantastic variety of opportunities, ranging from the full double gun driven days with loaders to walked-up shooting over dogs or with hawks.  With such a variety of drives on offer, up to a week's sport can be arranged without covering the same ground.

Partridge at Drumlanrig

Partridge

Partridge Shooting, the most recent sporting venture at Drumlanrig, was introduced with overwhelming success.  The partridges are released on the edge of the moorland and plummet over the guns below providing challenging shooting amidst stunning landscape.  We can boast over 20 drives ranging from high to exceptionally high birds and this has been described as one of the best and most sought after high partridge in the country.

Grouse Sport at Drumlanrig

Grouse

On average there are around 20 Driven Grouse Shoot Days, depending on the condition of the birds and how well they fly at the start of the season.  At Drumlanrig, there are 25,000 acres of heather moorland with 4 main beats:  Durisdeer, Wanlockhead, Daerhead and Locherben.

Conservation and responsible land management are of utmost importance on the Estate.  All the moors are well-maintained by burning resulting in a mosaic of colour on the hills ensuring a variety of different ages of heather for the grouse to live on.  The moors also provide an excellent example of habitat for wader birds, for example golden plover, curlews and lapwings.  Smaller birds such as skylarks, ring ousels and meadow pipits are also abundant with all of these species doing very well in the area.  This is a direct result of stringent vermin control measures.

Opportunities for Rough Shooting may be available on the Estate and if a walked-up day with Keepers is your preference, then several species are available including snipe, woodcock, pigeons, rabbits etc as well as pheasant and partridge.

Wild Duck Flighting can also be arranged on the many small lochs on the Estate along with a variety of wildfowl species.
