Drumlanrig Castle Fishings

Salmon and Sea Trout fishing together with our Trout Lochs and Coarse Fishing form the backbone of the Drumlanrig Castle Fishings.

Fishing for Salmon and Sea Trout on the Nith

For generations our fishings have been carefully managed as the private waters of Drumlanrig Castle, the magnificent 17th Century home of the Duke and Duchess of Buccleuch and Queensberry.

Middle Beat at Willowholm Pool

Salmon & Sea Trout

The River Nith is the largest and best known river in Dumfries and Galloway and has established a reputation for the quality of its salmon and sea trout.  The river rises at New Cumnock, in Ayrshire, and travels south through the beautiful Nithsdale scenery and on to its mouth at the Solway.

Drumlanrig Castle Fishings comprise a length of seven miles encompassing 28 pools and broadening from rocky gorge into gravelled riverbed with a variety of deep pools.  The reaches provide accessible fishing for both salmon and sea trout and consist of four beats: Lower, Middle, Upper and Nith Linns, each approximately 1.5 to 2 miles long. The season is longer than on most rivers extending from 25 February to 30 November.

Children's Tickets are available for £10 per day/evening per child.  Children must be aged 16 and under and must be accompanied by a responsible adult.  The first TWO fish may be taken.

Loyalty Cards are also now available for purchase.

Grayling Fishing

Drumlanrig Castle Fishings are offering Grayling fishing during the winter months, 1 December through to 31 March.  Costs are currently £10 per rod with a maximum of 15 rods on each of the four private River Nith beats (Lower, Middle, Upper and Nith Linns).

There will be no Sunday fishing, and catch and release is preferred.

Fishermen are asked not to wade in the water because of spawning redds.  A maximum of 3½lb breaking strain should be used and it is suggested that nymph, maggot, sweetcorn and fly are the most suitable means of catching Grayling.

Morton Castle Trout Loch

Loch Fishing & Coarse Fishing

The seven trout lochs at Drumlanrig Castle Fishings (Kettletonhead, Morton Castle, Starburn, Slatehouse, Coldstream, Farthingbank and Hillhead) are set in the most scenic and secluded settings. They range from 1.5 acres to 35 acres and offer excellent rainbow and wild brown trout fishing throughout the season - April to November inclusive.  Fly fishing only is permitted and barbless hooks must be used.  Brown Trout average 1lb and Rainbow 2lbs but with some reaching up to 4lbs.

Coarse Fishing is offered on two lochs - Dabton Pond and Morton Loch - and both are stocked with Tench.  Tickets are priced at £7.00 per Rod (including VAT).  A Loyalty card is also now available for £35.

Children's Tickets are available for £10 per day/evening per child.  Children must be aged 16 and under and must be accompanied by a responsible adult.  The first TWO fish may be taken.

Loyalty Cards are also now available for purchase.
